A Profile on Maggie Manning: Bargain Hunting Aficionado
Ever since she was a little girl Maggie Manning, eighteen, has been looking for the best deals and bargains she could find. It all started when Maggie would go out shopping with her mom and they’d go out to thrift shops and buy sale items. Maggie recalled that they had gotten into bargaining “Not because we had to but because it was fun.” Bargaining is also something that helps Maggie think if she truly wants something and thinks of the value of the product.
Maggie said she likes to look at thrift stores and discount stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls to find good deals. Though she tends to stay away from TJ Maxx as she hasn’t had a lot of luck at the stores here in the Kansas City area, she still believes that there is something there for everyone. When I asked what finding an amazing bargain feels like Maggie explained it as “ So exciting! After I find a good bargain I always call my Mom or sister and let them know about the sale or bargain I just found!” The best bargain Maggie has ever found was a Patagonia jacket for seventeen dollars where it normally costs around $100.
Though there are many good deals to be found there are also some really bad ones. When going out thrifting Maggie said she takes hours while looking for deals so she doesn’t accidentally buy something she doesn’t actually need or isn’t the best quality. When she doesn't find something she isn’t discouraged though she may be disappointed at the time. She explained it as “You can't find things sometimes and it’s just a bummer when you can't find something you really want.” Another con of bargaining is that you can’t rely on second-hand stores to have everything you need. Sometimes products bought at second-hand stores or discount establishments also wear down quicker and break easier which is something to take into account while shopping.
As for advice Maggie has a couple tips for people beginning to thrift. When you go thrifting you should stay longer than ten minutes and look at everything. You should also keep your head and stay calm because sometimes it can be very overwhelming. Don’t be afraid to try new things or got to new places and always wash something before wearing it. If you’re having doubts about bargain hunting “Remember that thrifting and bargain hunting is not only for people who can’t afford to buy at the full price you’re wrong because it’s fun and sustainable!”
