Lilly- Artist

                                                                         Lilly

Have you ever met somebody with a gifted artistic ability? Lilly has this special skill and is able to create magic with just her two hands. She is not the only one who has a passion for art. Art is adored all over the world due to its ability to express imaginative and technical skills. Even though it is loved by a large majority of the population not many people have the ability to create such art forms themselves. Lilly became aware that she had these skills at a young age when she was introduced to art in her grade school art class and began to enjoy art tremendously. She got a satisfaction from creating an art piece and having other people enjoy it as well. Although later her love for art changed due to the strict rules and criticism from other people.

When I asked Lilly about what brought her into the world of art she kept referring back to her grade school teacher. She mentioned that the teacher was “known to be mean” but was different towards her. She told me, “the teacher would ask to see my artwork and would often ask me if it was okay for her to submit my work into the local district museum.” This is when she realized her art was above average. She enjoyed making art and having people enjoy it as much as she did, even considered pursuing a career in the art field. I then got into further detail with her work and asked her how she approaches her artwork. She responded that she rarely free hands pieces. She likes to find a picture and recreate it with her own touch on it. She explained that she knows exactly where she wants to start and has everything planned out "like a blueprint," even as specific as which side of the page to start from.

She continued to make art in middle school and even enrolled in several different art classes, but when she chose a high leveled art class as an elective in high school she started to feel different towards the idea of becoming an artist. She said the class made her think more deeply about the whole aspect of becoming an artist. It made her realize that is was hard to make a living as an artist and she didn't think she had what it takes, for this purpose she said she respected artist who were able to be successful with doing so. She went on to tell me that the advanced art classes were a lot more serious than her previous grade school and middle school classes and that there was a lot more talented artist that made her feel self-conscious about her own work. She mentioned how the deadlines “sucked the fun out of it” and what she once seen as a stress reliever was now adding stress to her life. In the class she would be required to display her work as if she were to put it inside an actual exhibit some pieces even spending three hours or more creating. The class also made her have a reasoning behind her artwork which she felt that she didn’t have to have a reason. She said “if i want to draw a random line down the page I will why does it have to have a meaning behind it.” She admitted that she did not like criticism because everyone’s artwork is different.

Later on in the interview I asked her if drawing was the only type of art she was interested in. She noted to me that it wasn’t the only art she took interest in and that she liked to get “messy” with her work. She found it fun and interesting to use other utensils other than pen and paper to create art such as clay, recycled trash, and acrylics. The reason she said she liked clay was because “it reminds me of play-doe”. Further into the topic of different art works I asked her about food art and she told me about one of her art projects for her Biology class. She used candy and jello to make a cell to make her “project stand out,” which I found interesting because it showed that she is open to being creative with her artwork even when it comes to just mixing up the materials for her art pieces.

Throughout the interview she explained to me how her attitude for art had shifted over time. Telling me about her love for art as a child and how she got a satisfaction out of making art for people to appreciate. When she got older she realized that maybe art wasn’t what she wanted to seek a career from. She started to realize the logistics behind art and that there was more to art than just drawing a picture on a piece of paper or creating a sculpture. However, Lilly did not let this ruin her love for art. She admitted to me that she has not been as active with her artwork as she wants to be but, she still enjoys art and plans to continue creating pieces.
